New week, new Rust! What are you folks up to?
I had my first pull request to rust-lang/rust merged!!!
I'm in the early stages of writing a pixel art editor with no GUI library, just winit and softbuffer.
Mostly working on the next article I'll be publishing (prior article was on the basics of declarative macros).
In-between that, I'll keep working on my next crate!
Kowalski, an agent runtime where a 2B local model does the language work and plain Rust does the rest (SQL, files, scheduling). Just shipped 2.6.1 to crates.io. This week: a newcomer's first run "completed" with an empty file, because a step with no tools still listed tools in its prompt and the small model planned a fetch and answered with nothing. Now a step with no tools sees none, and a second empty answer fails the step loudly. Discovered that my system doesn't support egui_glow, and thus had to write my own voxel rendering engine instead of taking three-d's. Was nice to refresh my memory of hexagonal grids, I suppose.
Which also marks the moment when my robot-in-world-of-blocks emulator is essentially ready!
I did some refactoring this week and shipped source-mesh v1.1, adding a check for how many dependencies each “module” has. I’m putting “module” in quotes because the analyzer’s idea of a module is slightly different from Rust’s.
Oh, and I spent a fair bit of time playing around with cargo-mutants. Awesome tool—definitely a must-have for any project.
Still on Mars, a browser from scratch in Rust (own html/css layout, own js engine, own http on rustls). This week was selector matching: one index per style pass so combinator steps are lookups, plus a work budget on :has() so one nasty selector can't stall the pass. Eye got to 81.6% of the WPT reftests yesterday. Grid and svg still missing. Code is in mars/ at GitHub - OyadotAI/oya-browser: The browser control plane for AI agents.
