Hi. My name is Leo and i'm the ceo of Orus and we are currently making a programming language named Wyst that transpiles to rust and is build with rust. Wyst has c syntax with a little mix of Rust syntax. And i made the logo which looks like this
The gear and font is taken from rust.
Can this logo be used?
The trademark policy is found here:
This part seems relevant:
Appearing official, affiliated, or endorsed #
The most basic rule is that the Rust trademarks cannot be used in ways that appear (to a casual observer) official, affiliated, or endorsed by the Rust project or Rust Foundation, unless you have written permission from the Rust Foundation. This is the fundamental way we protect users and developers from confusion.
Thanks! I just contacted them
UPDATE: So i contacted them and this is what they said:
If anyone designs logos. possibly for languages please hit me up
This section to me reads as "is implemented in Rust".
While I of course cannot give legal advice either, note that that doesn't give any special access to using parts of Rust trademarks -- just like how building it with XCode doesn't let you use a logo similar to XCode's trademarks, or other analogous situations.
(If anything it's the opposite -- you'd likely have better luck with a similar-to-rust logo for, say, your gas lawn mower repair shop, since it's so disconnected from computer software.)
Well i thought i could make something like typescript where it's the same logo just changed colors and TS instead of JS. And it would make sense to do that right?
Let me say upfront: I am not a lawyer, and the following is based only on about 10 minutes of research. This is not legal advice, only some amateur analysis.
That situation is different. The black-and-yellow JS logo is community-produced and permissively licensed; it has nothing to do with Oracle, who currently own the “JavaScript” trademark via their acquisition of Sun Microsystems.
The most analogous thing within the Rust community would be Ferris, the unofficial mascot, which is not officially related to the Rust project or Foundation in any way as far as I’m aware.
