Historical reason behind lines_any

I've found that lines_any exists.

I understand that it is both deprecated in favour of, and implemented by means of, lines, but what was originally the difference between the two?

lines used to work only with \n line endings, while lines_any worked with both \n and \r\n line endings.

lines was changed to be the same as lines_any in RFC 1212.
