I'm not really the person to ask, but I'm sure you'll get good recommendations from others here. Perhaps add another post detailing what you're looking for? Or just dive into TiKV if that's what you're interested in (which tends to be the best motivation). I wasn't being critical of that (in itself or as a choice of code to learn from) - on the contrary, it seems admirably ambitious.
