This discourse web site being hacked? [edit: no, maintenance gone wrong]

I'll report this as well. :+1:

Btw the support team converted the public topic into a private discussion with Discourse support team, since it "potentially concerns customer data". I'll write updates here.

Seems everybody (Fortran, Erlang, Elixir, Julia, Swift, ...) is using discourse. Is it really that special?

Go and Python are additional examples, among others. I actually like it quite a bit compared to other systems of organizing forums, despite this current mishap.

Wait what, this is not a thing that the Rust project self hosts?

How does that work with PII / GDPR? I don't remembering being presented with information about that when creating my account.

It's quite configurable and smooth, with an attractive user interface that's easy to navigate.

Concerning which organizations are using Discourse, we can add to the list all six dozen plus community partners on the Image.sc Forum. For a full list of those partners, see this beautiful array of names and icons available as a pull-down on their front page:

When thinking of nice Discourse forums, I often think of that display.

The current situation shall pass, and over time will likely be remembered as a situation long ago that was a little inconvenient, and maybe even a little bit funny.

The fact that users.rust-lang.org and internals.rust-lang.org are hosted by Discourse is covered in the privacy policy.

As a “new kid on the block” here, I had not been aware of the Rust Internals site linked above until just now. It has been interesting to take a look around there, though it's not a place for a neophyte to post anything.

During my poking around there, this interesting historic logo turned up:

The discussion that leads to it (on GitHub) is here: End of days for the rust-lang nursery?.

It was quite cool to see this, especially while we're on the topic of logos.

That baby got a bit big for that stroller

Yeah, this logo is now mature and ready for prime time! All's we need to do is get it out of the stroller and onto the Rust Forum web page where its parent used to be.

Yay, the logo is back in its rightful place!

We got a response from Discourse that indeed this was a bug that happened during the read-only mode period, where they migrated this forum between servers (it could happen that some settings reverted back to the initial values). They are now working to restore all the settings to the correct values.

So just to have the picture clear in my mind:
Discourse provides a service¹ to host URLO and IRLO, which includes administration of the fora?

¹ As opposed to providing a product, or the Rust Foundation just using the discourse software and administering that itself in some way.

We rely on Discourse's paid hosting plans (where they handle hosting and updates), but the administration (configuration, moderation, etc) is done by the Rust project.

The reason why I mentioned that Discourse is working on restoring the settings (instead of us) is that we are not sure exactly which settings were reverted to their initial state due to the bug. We know some of the settings that changed (site title, logos, and the billing email address), but we don't know all of the Discourse settings by heart, and some of them might have also been reverted. That's why they are taking a look at it.

FYI, I and some other people are now seeing an issue where certain threads lead to a 404 “doesn't exist or is private” page despite being publicly listed. It is not yet understood.

So you have to leave this website to find this website's privacy policy? But there is also a link to a privacy policy on this website which doesn't lead to anywhere.

Yeah I just hit this too, I thought maybe it was because I forgot to select the category ... but now I can't even go back in to edit that or recover the contents of the post

I just changed the thread's title because I don't want people to be come here and be alarmed.

fommil: same issue with some seemingly random blocked topics, e.g. i cannot open your link/topic from main page either...

At present, there seem to be three topics that have 0 views and cannot be opened. Two of the topics were started by a new user, who asked about the problem in their second post, judging by the title. Should someone contact the user directly, so that they return after the problem gets fixed?
