Memory mapped I/O is not just an &[u8] as @vitalyd suggested. Last time I checked, files are allowed to be many TB in size, yet 32-bit processes can only memory map at most 2GB at a time.

A slice is a window of usize indexable range. The actual range may be less, ie isize on 32bit windows, but that’s beside the point.
