You might be interested in How to Design Programs which explicitly uses multiple language levels to walk from "Beginning Student" to "Intermediate Student." (The languages are, however, practically the same syntactically.) The focus is on the beginning student and CS fundamentals for program design: data structures, and programs that manipulate them. IIRC, many of the exercises involve "fun" graphics.
