If I get this announcement right, discord is the only official chat Rust community supports. Is there any alternatives?
I'm asking because it turned out I just cannot use discord without giving my phone number up to them (even thought I've never owned a discord account before). I'm definitely not going to do it for no good reason.
It looks like my IP is blacklisted for some reason and I have no way to prove it wasn't my fault. I contacted the support and this is what came out of it (nothing):

Hi CreepySkeleton,
I just checked with my team and upon review, it appears that our system's detection system has triggered successfully and we will not be removing the phone verification requirement, and you'll be required to register a phone number to your new Discord account in order to continue the use of it.
It's possible that our system detected that you were using a VPN or proxy that was shared with other bad actors, which is why our system flagged your account. However, for privacy reasons, we're not able to share the specifics of the inner workings of our system.
If you have any other concerns or need anything else, though, just let me know here.
Best,
Augustine

I didn't do any phone verification stuff because, well, I'm not going to
give my number up to some random dude on the internet, I consider it a
personal info. I was told phone number is not required for a discord
account, is it?
I did go through email verification thought. Isn't this enough?
Again, this is my first discord account. I've never had a chance to spam
or misbehave just because *I have yet to create a discord account*,
check my IP address.

Hey CreepySkeleton,
To help our team to look into this further, could you attach a screenshot of the phone verification error message that you're seeing on your end to this ticket?
Just keep me updated here!

Hey Discord!
I can't create a discord account. Whenever I log in I get redirected to
the "Something's going on" page, whatever I try.
I swear I'm not a spamer of some kind, this is my first discord account
as far as I can remember. In fact, I have yet to send a single message.
What do I do?

Welcome to the club -- Discord doesn't require a phone number for me but Google does. So I can't have a Google account (which can be a problem if you are an academic), and reCAPTCHA is always in hard mode for me. (I tried many different IPs and browsers, no idea what they are basing this on.)
However, for privacy reasons, we're not able to share the specifics [...]
I always find it so cynical when they cite "privacy reasons" for not telling you why they are discriminating against you. It's typical behavior when such companies ban accounts (have seen that for Amazon and Steam as well). If they said "we don't care enough to try and find out more", at least that'd be honest.
To answer the question, we use Zulip a lot for Rust language development, but I am not sure if there is a user-focused Zulip. The Zulip UI is also not the easiest to learn.
Zulip is definitely less approcheable from a UI point of view than alternatives, but once you get past the initial WTF stage, their streamed and threaded model actually makes sense for keeping large-scale chat discussions sane (e.g. to reduce notification volume and ease quick skims when logging back in after being away for several hours/days). I remember @nikomatsakis saying that they considered it a very strong point point of the platform. That being said, this property may not be so useful for user-focused chat, where keeping up with missed discussions is usually not a goal.
There’s rust-lang.slack.com as well, but it’s much lower volume than Discord. I happen to prefer it that way, but if you’re looking for maximum participation, you may be disappointed.
