Any insights on gccrs?

I keep hearing gccrs is making good progress and I think is able to compile a rust kernel, though not clear on this. I am running GCC 15 and heard that 16 would likely be doable. I am starting work on an LKM and would really like to stick with GCC if possible, even if it's only partially ready by just being able to build a skeletal kernel module. Even if it's not quite ready, I have plenty to learn in the meantime, as I know it'll eventually get there.

Does anyone have any insights on where gccrs might be or how far along it'll work? And I am aware of https://rust-gcc.github.io/ which is all I have to follow a.t.m.

It’s not.

Cohen began the RustConf talk by stating that the title of the presentation, "Compiling the Linux kernel with gccrs", was a lie. Gccrs cannot currently compile the Linux kernel, for multiple reasons.

cg_gcc (GCC backend for rustc as opposed to Rust frontend for GCC) is a lot further along and mostly functional already.
